    Abstract Die vorliegende Untersuchung analysiert die Wirkkraft des Generationenaustauschs auf das Meinungsklima zu Zugewanderten in Ost- und Westdeutschland. Theoretisch basiert der Beitrag auf Mannheims Generationentheorie sowie auf gruppenkonflikttheoretischen Ansätzen und der Kontakthypothese. Empirische Grundlage für die Kohortenanalysen bietet die theoretisch begründete Generationeneinteilung für die ost- und westdeutschen Geburtskohorten zwischen 1908 und 1999. Basierend auf den Daten des European Social Survey (ESS) von 2002 bis 2018 kann die These verworfen werden, dass der Prozess der Generationenablösung in Deutschland zu einem stetig toleranter und offener werdenden Meinungsklima zu Zugewanderten führen werde. Vielmehr ist ein Generationenverlauf zu beobachten, der nicht linear verläuft, sondern schwankend. So weisen die jüngsten Generationen in Westdeutschland wieder negativere Haltungen zu Zugewanderten auf als die in den 1970er Jahren sozialisierte Generation der frühen Babyboomer, die wiederum deutlich zuwandererfreundlicher ist als die älteste Kriegsgeneration. Im Osten hingegen sind im gesamten Generationenverlauf im Vergleich zur Kriegsgeneration keine signifikanten Einstellungsänderungen zu beobachten. Des Weiteren verweisen die Befunde der Panelanalyse auf Kohortenebene auf eine gewisse Stabilität der Einstellungen innerhalb der Generationen bei sich verändernder Bedrohungsfaktoren auf der Kontextebene. Weder Veränderungen der Arbeitslosenquote noch des Anteils an Personen mit Migrationshintergrund führen im Beobachtungszeitraum zu Einstellungsänderungen. Einzig der Anstieg an Schutzsuchenden führt zu etwas restriktiveren Haltungen zu Zugewanderten innerhalb der Generationen.

    Abstract Public opinion climates on immigrants are subject to certain dynamics. This study examines two mechanisms for such dynamics in Western EU member states for the 2002–2018 period. First, the impact of cohort replacement and, second, the impact of periodic threat perceptions, namely, changing macroeconomic conditions and shifts in immigration rates. To date, empirical research on anti-immigrant sentiments rarely combines these two concepts simultaneously to disentangle the interplay of period and cohort effects and determine the factors for long- and short-term attitude changes in societies. Motivated by this gap in the literature, I conduct multiple linear regression analyses of pooled data from all waves of the European Social Survey to show that the process of cohort replacement has led to a substantially more positive opinion climate toward immigrants since the 2000s. However, results indicate that in the future, this positive development is likely to come to a halt since younger cohorts no longer hold significantly more immigrant-friendly attitudes than their immediate predecessors. Furthermore, we observe different period effects to impact cohorts’ attitudes. Fixed-effects panel analyses show that the effect of changing macroeconomic conditions on cohorts’ attitudes is low. Changes in immigration rates, however, lead to significantly more dismissive attitudes when immigrants originate from the Global South as opposed to when they enter from EU countries. These insights suggest that it is less economic or cultural threat perceptions, but ethnic prejudice that plays a key role for natives to oppose immigration. Overall, findings suggest that it is not either cohort or period effects driving large-scale attitude changes, but rather we observe an interplay of both.

    Abstract Climate change adaptation is essential to mitigate risks, such as extreme weather events triggered by global warming and amplified in dense urban environments. Ecosystem-based adaptation measures, such as urban greening, are promoted in cities because of their flexibility and their positive side effects, such as human health benefits, ecological effects, climate mitigation and a range of social benefits. While individual co-benefits of greening measures are well studied, often in public green spaces, few studies quantify co-benefits comprehensively, leaving social benefits particularly understudied. In this study, we perform biophysical and socio-cultural assessments of co-benefits provided by semi-public, residential greening in four courtyards with varying green structures. We quantify effects on thermal comfort, biodiversity, carbon storage and social interaction. We further assess the importance of these co-benefits to people in the neighbourhood. Subsequently, we weight the results from the biophysical assessments with the socio-cultural values to evaluate how even small differences in green structures result in differences in the provision of co-benefits. Results show that, despite relatively small differences in green structures, the residential courtyards with a higher green volume clearly generate more co-benefits than the residential yards with less green, particularly for thermal comfort. Despite differences in the valuation of co-benefits in the neighbourhood, socio-cultural weights did not change the outcome of the comparative assessment. Our results highlight that a deliberate management strategy, possibly on neighbourhood-scale, could enhance co-benefits and contribute to a more sustainable urban development.

    Abstract Introduction: Stress is associated with a multitude of physical and psychological health impairments. To tackle these health disorders, over-the-counter (OTC) products like Neurodoron® are popular since they are considered safe and tolerable. Experience reports and first studies indicate that Neurodoron® is efficient in the treatment of stress-associated health symptoms. To confirm this, a non-interventional study (NIS) with pharmacies was conducted.
    Methods: The NIS was planned to enroll female and male patients who suffered from nervous exhaustion with symptoms caused by acute and/or chronic stress. The main outcome measures were characteristic stress symptoms, stress burden, and perceived stress. Further outcome measures included perceived efficacy and tolerability of the product as assessed by the patients and collection of adverse drug reactions (ADRs). A study duration of about 21 days with a recommended daily dose of 3-4 tablets was set.
    Results: 279 patients were enrolled at 74 German pharmacies. The analyzed set (AS) included 272 patients (mean age 44.8 ± 14.4 years, 73.9% female). 175 patients of the AS completed the NIS.
